How are painters protected against painting hazards?

Painters must wear special safety equipment while on the job. To avoid breathing toxic fumes, painters working in tight places, such as the inside of a big storage tank, typically wear self-contained suits. Some painters wear extra clothes and protective eyewear when using abrasive cleaners to remove previous coatings. In addition, painters may use scaffolding or harnesses to work on bridges, ships, large structures, or oil rigs.
